NYNEX Commitment to Environmental Programs NYNEX strives to incorporate daily programs for reducing, recycling and reusing materials -- in fact, we've received numerous awards for environmental innovation, management, leadership and pollution prevention programs. Educating our employees in environmental awareness as it relates to the telecommunications industry is another priority. Following are just a few of the highlights that NYNEX has worked towards in the last few years in New England and New York. DID YOU KNOW?: More than 600 NYNEX locations have office paper recycling programs in place, covering 57,000 employees. In 1994 NYNEX recycled over 24 million pounds of office paper. By reformatting the Yellow Pages with such enhancements as reducing the white pages section paper weight, reducing all margins and listing repeated surnames only once in 90 major directories, 2,750 tons of paper is reduced annually. In 1994 NYNEX began two-sided printing on its telephone bills which now saves 2 million pounds of paper and $5.1 million on paper and postage annually. NYNEX now uses telephone bill remittance envelopes made from 100% post-consumer fiber, including 75% from old telephone directories. NYNEX operates Material Recycling Centers (MRCs) in Orangeburg, NY and Worcester, MA. In 1995 the two facilities received approximately 49 million pounds of cable and wire, central office scrap components and miscellaneous telecommunications equipment. The MRCs recycled 98% of all material received, significantly reducing the amount of material sent to landfills. Project ROSE (Reuse of Office Supplies and Equipment) provides an easy opportunity for employees to drop-off unneeded office supplies and pick-up useful surplus materials.
